Well I don't technically meet the definition of a sophisticated investor quite yet but getting closer. But my argument is that you don't necessarily need to be a sophisticated investor to outperform others who are paid salaries to manage other people's money, you just need an acute sense of what represents value.
I have part of my super where I manage it through the super funds trading platform and the rest I leave in a growth style fund for others to manage and my goal is to outperform those managing the growth fund and in 4 out of 5 of the most recent years I have done that with some premium, and on the year I did miss, I was within 1 per cent of what the fund manager did .
So why have I bought here? It's all about seeing some value long term. I can see that there will be a continued need for both types of coal into the next decade, and I can see WHC scooping up assets from companies on the decarbonisation pathway at discounts to their true value. They are experts in the field and should be able to unlock further value as they acquire assets. Now i am slightly in the red at present, but not worried as I have faith in my investment thesis.
