Some very interesting comments here on SFSFs. I retired just over 12 years ago. I had the option of a defined benefits pension or a lump sum and took the latter - about $400k. I set up an SMSF and started investing in shares with zero knowledge of how it all worked. Twelve years later, the value of my SMSF has just passed $1M, thanks mainly to my decision at the beginning of this year to invest heavily in fossil fuels. Over the twelve years, my wife and I contributed further to the fund, but we also withdrew about $30k per annum on average as a pension. It has been very worthwhile. I have enjoyed the experience immensely, learnt an enormous amount about finance and investing - great to keep the ageing brain active. It is not much work, and depends how much you want to do yourself. This year, because I sold a lot of long term holdings to buy my energy shares it will probably take me 10 to 15 hours to prepare everything to hand to my accountant. I would guess his fees will be about $1500, not too bad as a percentage of $1M. Each to his own, but my SMSF experience has been great.
