The COP28 Summit has been able to obtain a "much-desired unanimous" Final Declaration, calling for a "transition away from Fossil fuels" by 2050.

Some countries wanted the much more demanding & concrete words for an outright "phaseout" from fossil fuels by 2050- but a unanimous agreement could not be achieved over the word "phaseout", so this was not presented to delegates for a formal, Final Declaration.

It appears likely, IMO, that there will still be fossil fuels used after 2050

Germany was a strong supporter of including the words "phaseout".
DW German Official State Media said 14.12.23

"The decision, agreed by almost 200 countries, has been hailed as marking the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era.

However, the agreed text did not call for an outright phasing out of oil, gas and coal. As a result, it leaves "a lot of room for interpretation, according to UN climate chief Simon Stiell.

Stiell warned that "loopholes leave us vulnerable to fossil fuel vested interests, which could crash our ability to protect people everywhere against rising climate impacts."

COP28 strike deal to 'transition away' from fossil fuels – DW – 12/13/2023
The very green CNN A. Dewan et al, 13.23.23 said

"The world agreed toa new climate dealin Dubai on Wednesday at the COP28 summit after two weeks of painstaking talks, making an unprecedented call totransition away from fossil fuels, but using vague language that could allow some countries to take minimal action...

What the deal asks countries to do

“At long last the loud calls to end fossil fuels have landed on paper in black and white at this COP,” said Jean Su, the energy justice director at the Center for Biological Diversity, “but cavernous loopholes threaten to undermine this breakthrough moment.”

The agreement falls short of requiring the world to “phase-out” oil, coal and gas — which more than 100 countries and many climate groups had been calling for, language which was included in an earlier version of the draft.

Instead, the agreement “calls on” countries to “contribute” to global efforts to reduce carbon pollution in ways they see fit, offering several options, one of which is “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems … accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050.”
