Usually explosions are human error of some sort. The automatic systems in these mines are second to none. Gas monitored and spikes cause immediate shutdown of equipment. Seams are drained of gas prior to extraction of coal. The gas drainage is not only vertical it is horizontal. No system is perfect so the back up emergency systems are necessary/essential. IMO of course.
