“The assets are worth $US5 billion ($7.4 billion) on consensus estimates from sell-side analysts across the globe. Bank of America has placed the highest price tag on the coal mines at $US6.19 billion, while Berenberg has said they are worth about $US2.55 billion.
The up-for-grabs portfolio includes five coal mines, which delivered $999 million net profit last year and more than $2.83 billion in the 12 months before that, according to documents filed with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission”.
Based on the above analyst valuation for Anglo’s mines, how does everyone feel about Whitehaven’s recent purchases? Also, for this price, can you see Whitehaven taking on more debt and putting in a bid for all or any of these mines? Is this an opportunity they won’t want to pass up or should they payoff what they have and look for opportunities down the road?
