The recent fire at the Grosvenor mine presents a meaningful upside risk to our current met coal forecasts (US$230/t by end 2024). Due to the disruptions from Grosvenor, and the weak performance by BMA, it is quite possible the met-coal market will move into deficit due to robust demand from India and SE Asia (post the monsoon season) as well as ongoing robust demand from China (due to domestic mine depletion). In addition to the possible market deficit, cost pressures and structural headwinds facing new projects could continue to support higher prices (all emphases, mine) for longer than we are currently expecting".
