Firstly since when did POH say that the oxycodone patch was unable to reach therapeutic levels. Please refer to past annual reports for graphs of systemic oxycodone levels reached.
If you are assuming this because POH has developed a topical non-systemic patch, only because a trial showed not much entered the blood stream than you are wrong.
TPM allows for variances in penetration depth and therefore actives can be altered to be either systemic or not.
As oxymorphone is much more powerful, a lower dose can be used to provide a better therapeutic result and a smaller patch.
Your summation of topical oxycodone being almost a gimic comparing it to competing with arnica is naive. Any current transdermal product is gimic as it has limited capacity to reach peripheral opioid receptors, which of course oxycodone can reach with assistance of TPM. A topical opioid product that can can reach opioid receptors is revolutionary, and if you can't identify with that, you haven't really grasped the concept. Imagine providing real opioid relief of chronic pain, without any systemic effect.
Also, it has been made clear that POH do not have to proof drug efficacy. That has been done, the beauty of working with drugs already in the system. POH has to show it can sustain blood plasma levels above a therapeutic level, which the recent trial showed not only to do that, but if they wanted to, to reach peak levels that an oral dose reached, well above what they needed.
