Noone marched on Moscow in that time to balkanize the USSR and establish a system of governance more aligned with western values, they simply wouldn't dare. Putin is well aware of the mistakes made in the late 80s and has made it clear, any threat to the Russian state and the nukes start flying.

Russia is in a proverbial bathtub in Ukraine, with all western nations standing over them, with their wrists cut, hoping to drown the Russians in that bathtub with their own blood. The more the west isolates Russia, the more dangerous that Russia becomes. They say they are trying to end the conflict but all they do is move forward toward escalation. Energy prices have naturally remained elevated during times of widespread global conflict between large military powers.
