obviously you're not from China or not from rural parts of China or too young to remember.
farmers never use coal to heat their kang beds, simple reason is too expensive to use unless you live near coal mines you can get them for free, if you want more reason? too slow to start to hot to handle and too dangerous to use.
majority of them use sorghum stalks corn stalks or dead branches anything that can be burnt and not cost anything which is most important.
now days most of them have been converted to gas heating.
