IMHO Japanese press releases on new tecnologies without REE for use in the electric power chain is just to build up a threat against Chinese politics. There are different solutions to replace fuels derived from oil, but the Japanese ones.
I am not excluding the possibility for new solutions, anyhow from basic research to broad application it's a long way to go and still we are just starting with hybrid and electric power automotives, despite more than twenty years of research.
