ABS retail data released today has highlighted something unusual in that the spending on dining and takeaway (high result of +3.3%) both rose in unison. The marks a distinct departure from ABS data over the pandemic period where lockdowns would skew the results of both eating sectors moving in polar opposites.
Probably more importantly it's the fourth consecutive numbers beat for retail spending which may be pointing to the strength of the economy - Prices maybe rising and real incomes may be falling but we continue to spend with confidence.
