LaserBond is widely recognised for its high-quality MMC (Metal Matrix Composite) deposits, which are predominantly composed of tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a nickel-based (Ni) matrix. These advanced coatings provide superior wear resistance, corrosion protection, and extended service life for critical industrial components.
A key factor that must be carefully considered is the sourcing of raw materials, particularly the primary powder ingredients used in LaserBond’s MMC laser-clad deposits. For its two major customers, Weir and FLSmidth, as well as for other critical applications such as steel mill rolls, the core material, (Tungsten Carbide) is imported from China. China produces over 80% of the world's Tungsten.
Given the increasing concerns over supply chain reliability, geopolitical tensions, and potential trade restrictions, this reliance on Chinese imports presents a strategic risk. Disruptions in the supply chain—whether due to political, economic, or logistical factors—could significantly impact production continuity and cost stability.
