But one recent report, as I understand it they have three major academic centres dedicated to RE research and a host of commercial partnerships, with considerable state subsidy, involving hundreds, if not thousands, of researchers.

However their ability to leverage Deng's legacy has been constrained by lack of understanding mkt dynamics, witness demand destruction resulting clumsy manipulation 2007-2010, and weak innovation at the commercial interface, countless RE applications are a copy of ROW tech, most often lagging cutting edge, Wind Gen perfect example.

While they have been able to keep up with Japanese developments in the cost effectiveness of NdFeB, and claim to be closing the gap, they lag at the point of practical application. Evidenced initially by their entrapment ROW OEM's in domestic JV's, now external forays:

What I find hugely encouraging ATM is the number of reports I'm finding of small/medium ROW companies that are leveraging the greatly enhanced cost effectiveness of NdFeB in specifically designed high efficiency PMM, and specific application such as regenerative braking elevator motors, claimed 60/70% energy savings. Runs all the way from exhaust fans commercial poultry to major marine applications, and interestingly NOT originating US, Japan or China, but UK, Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Canada, et al. Perhaps example the best of the capitalist system, innovation drawn to fill a void?

Great example of the timeline to development and efficiency rationale in just one marine application by Rolls Royce:

    http://www.ervo-group.eu/np4/{$clientServletPath}/?newsId=28&fileName=17.pdf

Jan 2017: "Helge Gjerde, Rolls-Royce, Senior Vice President for Propulsion – Commercial Marine said: “Following a programme of successful sea trials, which exceed our expectations in terms of efficiency, we are delighted to broaden our range of permanent magnet technology with the launch of a new azimuth thruster."

    https://www.marineinsight.com/shipp...unches-new-permanent-magnet-azimuth-thruster/

Suspect we are about to witness a convergence of RE industry maturity with development greater efficiencies in the final link of the NdFeB MSC stimulating faster growth in application, regardless BEV, and anecdotally driven by Western innovation.

Will have the opportunity to test these thoughts shortly, and the conveners Metal Events are going to approach a couple of the small PMM innovators with a view to present November.
