Financials for Remoate Area Power Systems (RAPS) owners can be quite favourable. On top of these the Australian Greenhouse Office is supporting various energy storage and renewable generation projects.

For example in Western Australia direct subsidies of up to 50%, read that again, 50%, of RAPS systems can be claimed. This greatly encourages matching the PCE redox battery with renewable generation (solar or wind) backed by small diesel. Rebates of up to $500,000 are available for larger systems which might support a small community.

General eligibility criteria (for WA)
• Funding is available for renewable energy systems that partly or fully replace diesel generation, or where diesel would otherwise have been used.
• Facilities that will be served by renewable energy systems must not be connected to the South West or Pilbara grids.
• In general, expenditure on renewable energy generating equipment must be at least 30% of total expenditure on which a rebate is sought.
• Renewable energy technologies must be appropriate for given applications and must meet relevant standards and regulations.
• Sufficient resources must be available for the effective implementation of projects.

Rebates available

The Renewable Remote Power Generation Program provides rebates of up to 50% of the capital cost of renewable energy systems including:
• Renewable energy generating equipment such as photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines
• Essential enabling equipment such as power converters and energy storage systems
• Essential non-equipment expenditure such as design and installation.

Large projects
Various large renewable energy based generation projects, with a rebate value greater than $500,000, could be implemented in WA through the Renewable Remote Power Generation Program. These include wind, photovoltaic, solar thermal, biomass and hydro systems.
