School children take up the Election debate with insightful results

Taroona High School grade 7 students Nikki Hudson, 12, Andrew Quin, 13, and Sophie Young, 12, who all completed the News Corp elections survey.

TASMANIAN children have strong views on the election campaign, even those who will have to wait six years to vote.

More than 1200 students from years 6 to 12 around Australia took part in the Galaxy poll, done for News Corp and the Mercury's Newspapers in Education section.

In Tasmania, 233 children took part in the poll.

Of those, 34 per cent said they would vote for Labor, 24 per cent for the Liberals, 15 per cent for the Greens and 24 per cent did not know.

Education was the key issue for the Tasmanians, with 55 per cent, followed by jobs for young people (47 per cent), health care (40 per cent) and asylum seekers and same-sex marriage (33 per cent).

Thirty per cent of the surveyed children said the NBN was a priority - twice that of most other states.

Taroona High School's Andrew Quin, 13, said people his age should know more about politics.

Nikki Hudson, 12, said she would like to see different processes for asylum seekers.

"It's a very hard subject, but rather than putting asylum seekers in detention ... maybe they could work out something a bit different," she said.

Sophie Young, 12, said she thought politicians were mostly honest.

"I think it's been going OK. Some things do make me a little bit cross."
