Sorry mack but have to disagree. 88% of smokers do not die contract lung cancer and of the remaining 12% that do, 90% exceed 40 pack years, i.e. pack a day for 40 years. Rough maths $5 tax per day x 365 x 40, say $75,000 additional tax without considering the 88% who pay the levy towards the 12% that overdue it.
And don't believe me, google lung cancer rates and epidemiology studies, looking for ones that actually go into detail without simply bleating about smokers as if they all carry some disease.
Lastly, be prepared for the facts to intrude on further Aussie (and generally English speaking) smugness, neurosis and lack of common sense - most diseases are multi factorial and those relating to smoking are largely dose dependent, once you peel away the genes.
The one you should be worrying about is diet and overeating, which will often lead to obesity, cardiology diseases and colorectal cancers. And these folk don't even pay their additional taxes.
