Most accountants do know what they are doing but they probably (but not exclusively) work for the larger firms who maintain "continuing education" programs and you may not want to pay their fees. Besides, they probably don't want to do individual's returns. There is an awful lot of work for them with major clients post GST.
If I didn't get mine done for free I'd learn how to do my own. Once you've done the spreadsheet it can't be too hard, could it? But as I say, I don't have to. :)
