I have found that as long as you are honest the ATO its staff will treat you with respect.
I had a difference of opinion with the ATO some years ago and, after some discussion we came to a mutually acceptable understanding. I compile my own tax return. But I agree, that the ability to defer your payment to the ATO is a bonus available if you use an accountant
