    I should have mentioned in my earlier reply that to offset any gains against prior year's losses that the Taxation Office would need to be in possession of the information concerning the loss that was made. It may be that in order to have your details with the A.T.O. in this regard that you need to submit this information prior to lodging the year in which your gains are made. This may mean lodging an amended Taxation Return for the year in question (the year when the loss was incurred) to record when and how much loss was made. A trip to a tax agent prior to the end of this financial year might not be a bad idea if it is considered that an amendment to your previous return is a wise idea.
