TB or not to be,that is the question
Super drug resistant forms of tuberculosis are at the tip of a global epidemic and only small changes are needed to help them spread quickly, US researchers predicted today.
Two studies show multiple-drug resistant TB, which can be cured only with a monitored cocktail of drugs over months,could start spreading.
The reports,in today's issue of the journal Nature Medicine,coincide with a report last week saying the World Health Organisation's efforts to control multi-drug resistant TB were not working as well as hoped.
If reports are true,TB could make a dangerous new resurgence.
TB infects an estimated 8.7 million people a year and kills two million a year.
This above news item is in tonight's free Melbourne mX newspaper, and to my mind highlights the need for the FDA and the CDC to expedite Quantiferon-Gold approval and support it with flexible guidelines and worldwide publicity.
