BCG vaccinated people may test positive for the Mantoux skin test, even if they are not latently infected with TB. BCG is a common cause of skin test inaccuracy; the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test is unaffected by BCG vaccination because the specific TB proteins detected by the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test do not occur in the BCG vaccine. Thus, QuantiFERON-TB Gold is highly specific and a positive test result is strongly predictive of true infection with M. tuberculosis.
