@URI, I like the way both of you are thinking. From a sentimental standpoint, I think I'd prefer striking them from pure Ni. Insetting with something precious sounds great too. Maybe give some thought to the possibility of using gold. Nickel and gold... I can't imagine a better combination that gives a more fitting nod to the region.
Just my knee-jerk preliminary thoughts...
