Innovative Fuel Cell Technologies from Germany on the Verge of Serial Production

Foreword
A secure energy supply is and will remain an important advantage for Germany as a business location. In addition to conventional power plants, decentralised power and heat generation is becoming increasingly important. Fuel cells are highly efficient energy conver- ters that allow for further reducing primary energy use and CO2 emissions. If fuel cells are used in large quantities, as is expected from 2017 onward, this can help offset fluctuating electricity sup- ply from renewable energy.

The industry is well prepared for the general laucnch of fuel cell technology in Germany. Germany has the scientific and industrial expertise for the development, series production and international marketing of fuel cells, where we are in competition with North America and Asia. To proceed, the industry needs reliable conditions for introducing the technology in Germany.

This would create a home market to serve as a showcase for German energy technology, sparks further potential for innovation, and secures "Made in Germany" technology with considerable export potential. The market for fuel cells and fuel cell components is growing steadily. Revenues in the fuel cell industry passed the €100 million mark in 2013, and its companies expect revenues in the billion-euro range for 2020 as they look optimistically to the years ahead.

he German Engineering Federation's (VDMA) Working Group Fuel Cells pools the skills of the German fuel cell industry. Its members cover the entire value chain, from components to systems.
