Start with the end in mind - making as much money in a short a time frame as possible. The actual technique you use TA or FA doesn't matter too much, only the bottom line. Clark knows FA, so he does that, but he knows sweet FA about TA. He is as rigid and blinkered as you can get. Much better to be open minded.
Keep in mind also that even though Rivkin says he never met rich chartists, there are plenty of them. Just read Market Wizards, interview style book on the top traders in the World.
