re: question for fairdinkum If you strip the rubbish out of the GAAP results you will get a PE above 30.
The fundamentalist bulls continually argue the PE is around 16 at the moment. The bears above 30.
If you have a look at www.stockselector.com they give the following details for the S&P 500. The Dow they calculate at 21.80. Note stock options expensing and proper pension fund accounting would significantly increase these numbers.

PE Ratio: 25.8
Price-To-Earnings Growth (PEG): 1.23
Price-To-Sales: 1.42
Estimated Earnings Growth: 21.0%
Dividend Yield: 1.7%
Historic Earnings Growth: 10.5%
Price-To-Book Value: 2.38 Dow is 3.50
