Brokers, especially senior ones, know which questions to ask and have a good idea on how to interpret the answer based upon voice inflexion, words used etc.... even if it is a laborious no comment.
Working in IB myself I can assure you that speaking to corporate execs on a daily basis does give me a great insight into what is likely to happen in the near future.
Naturally most of that cannot be put in writing or written up as a research report but it it is the sort of thing a good senior broker will pass on to his clients on a caveat emptor basis. A broker who calls many stocks right in this regard is likely to keep his clients happy.
So if an HC contributor also passes along such feedback, they naturally cannot say so and so person at so and so broker told me etc ... as that would not be playing cricket.
Best thing to do under the circumstances is say thank you for making the effort.
Personally I appreciate it.
