CMC wins ‘Innovator of the Year’ award
at the Detroit World Congress
The Board of CMC Power Systems Limited (ASX: CSY) is pleased to announce the
International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) monthly magazine, Autoomotk
Engineering Infernaiional, has voted CMC Power Systems’ Automotive Auxiliary
Power Unit (AAPU) among the top products and technologies at this year’s SAE
World Congress in Detroit.
The editors of Automotive Engineering International (AEI) selected the AAPU for the
magazine’s ‘Innovator of the Year’ award. The AEI citation said “the installation
displays the feasibility of mounting the AAPU as an under-slung unit in its own
enclosure” in the Ford Lincoln Navigator demonstration vehicle, and the electrical
system “showcases three 42-volt features representative of future applications of the
technology, including drive motors for the rear air conditioning compressor, power-
assisted steering pump and the main vehicle power unit cooling fan”.
The AAPU was developed through CMC’s subsidiary, Aria Power Products Inc.

The Executive Chairman, Mr Graham Fountain who is in Detroit tu promote the APU
said the company was delighted to have been chosen for the award, which was a
recognition of the cooperation between CMC, APP, and its UK collaborators,
Cosworth Technology and Prodrive.
He said the award had been made for the quiet, compact AAPU system installed in
the rear of a Ford Lincoln Navigator, incorporating the SYTEC 5UUcc engine
harnessed to a 5 kilowatt high-efficiency permanent magnet generator.
The AEI magazine was clearly impressed by the participation of the two companies
commissioned by CMC - Prodrive, which installed the AAPU into the Navigator and
integrated it with the vehicle’s electrical system, and Cosworth Technology, which
built the prototype unit,” Mr fountain said.
Mr Kasperowicz said a test program on the AAPU by Cosworth Technology had
confirmed that CMC had developed the world’s most economical petrol engine, with
fuel consumption of 300 grams per kilowatt hour.
“I am very happy that the efforts of engineers in our subsidiaries CMC Power
Technologies and Aria Power Products Inc. and our collaborators in Prodrive and
Cosworth Technology have been rewarded in this way, and both Prodrive and
Cosworth have indicated they are proud to be part of the award.”
Mr Kasperowicz said there had been strong signs at the Congress that the upgrade
of car electrical systems from 12 to 42 volts was already happening.
“General Motors unveiled a truck with a 42-volt electrical system driven by an
Integrated Starter-Alternatorllntegrated StarterGenerator (ISAlISG) and announced
plans to launch three more next year,” he said.
“Our APU has many advantages over the ISAASG solution, and we view this move
by GM as being highly significant. It should prompt many other manufacturers to
switch to 42-votts, opening up potential customers for our “drop in” unit, which wilt not
involve costly design and development.”
Mr Kasperowicz said he and Mr Fountain had attended 42-volt technical sessions at
the SAE World Congress at which there had been strong interest in the CMClAPP
APU, and it was clear that issues of platform integration - allowing the cost of 42 volt
systems to be shared over a range of vehicles - would speed its adoption.
