I heard Joseph Campbell describe that the Israelite herders were patriarchal due to lifestyle and so they needed a patriarchal god compared with the settled agricultural societies who were generally Goddess worshipping, more in touch with the moon, or whatever. He says we only need to look at what the Israelites did on behalf of God to these settled agricultural societies, as documented in the Old Testament.
