There will be endless arguments, of course, as to the composition of this language, but it could be achieved. I believe that Esperanto was developed as an auxiliary language for the world but it needed global support and uptake.

It seems so logical that it's hard to believe that in 2020 we can't communicate person to person anywhere on earth.

Doubt it, English is the world language. With smart phones and apps any two people can now communicate.
Would love to see the Chinese run with English and finish the job the yanks started in the1800's (colour color).When China has the most English speakers, they will own English.
