Yes, I taught English for several years to immigrants, so I fully understand the difficulties in trying to explain this derivative, mongrel language to others who have a more phonetic, commonsensical language base.

English reflects thousands of years of conquest and even then, if not for Shakespeare inventing over 400 words to give English functionality and a full palette of expression, it would have remained and kind of Creole for the peasants.

I am not in anyway putting English forward as the auxiliary language, but I think it will get there by default anyway. The desperate need is that we can all speak to each other. I think that would remove so much prejudice and suspicion. Language is in a constant state of flux, so if a form of English becomes the global, common tongue, no doubt it will evolve out many of its faults and take on words from every language group.
