The distinction was between the ability to communicate using sound/s, which many species are able to do, and language, defined as a form of structured communication that allows the exchange of complex information, ideas, concepts, etc, between multiple people.

Spoken language is a system of sounds, each sound representing objects, ideas, concepts, etc, symbols that have defined meanings.

    We make comprehensible noises.
