Victorian coronavirus hotline remains overwhelmed by callersBy Paul Sakkal
Callers to Victoria’s coronavirus hotline are waiting up to two hours on hold, a day after it crumbled under the weight of thousands of calls.
As of Sunday, the 1800 helpline was receiving an average of 250 calls per day. In the first half of Tuesday, it received about 5000 calls.
The government said it would shift 100 existing staff members to man the hotline by Friday.
On Wednesday morning, the hotline was operational, but callers were waiting up to two hours on hold, indicating the service was still not equipped to handle the level of demand
