I work for an oil and gas company. In Mining and oil and gas there tends to be statistically higher numbers of people who suffer from mental health problems. For example, on the Inpex project in Darwin, NT. They work 4 weeks on, 1 week off rosters. So effectively only get 1/4 of the year at home with their friends and families. There has been 9 suicides from workers on that project since it started.

Of course, it's easy to say well they get paid more, they chose to do it, etc. But sometimes it is harder than it seems. A lot of these people would have enjoyed the last mining boom that saw big pay increases and good working conditions but since then work is harder and harder to find for some of these trades so they take what they can get. Which is unfortunate when things like this happen. We do medicals every two years and they are extremely in depth medicals. But not one blip into your mental status. Disappointing really. Hope this changes.
