property is an emotion driven asset class in australia. Unlike shares almost everyone has at least one property or aspires to acquire more when they can afford i.e. gearing up as you say.

It is right to say australia is like a ponzi scheme with the banks on top and all of us on the bottom geared to the hilt.

Whats the alternative, get left behind when everyone elses equity is increasing?

There is also allot more equity in australia than allot of people think. I have no doubt that people buying ppr's now will struggle to break even in a few years when all costs are taken into account however investors should do ok. Let's see how it goes i guess, i am however more comfortably holding onto my property portfolio than not having the exposure as without its growth over the past 5 years i would be worth nothing....at all or at least nothing worth writing home about.
