The US stock market is the 'shop window' of the US economy.

Currently it bears no relation to corporate profitability or the economic health of the US.

The stock market is kept high by the Federal Reserve for geopolitical reasons. They are pumping in trillions - and debasing the currency every day in doing so - in order to keep the stock market up and project US strength and power out to the world. No matter if the US economy is crumbling internally: so long as the PTB can point to a bouyant stock market, they hope that will put a veneer over the cracked and broken facade.
