Conroy is in an interesting position. By talking down Telstra's revenue from fixed lines and thus the compensation for premature redundancy due to the nbn's ftth, Conroy is simultaneously elevating doubts over the worth of the nbn itself - just because it's fibre doesn't alter the fact that it's another fixed line.
Governments have a good record in messing with communications to the detriment of the public interest. Apart from freezing Telstra's capital spend much to Australia's detriment, does anyone recall the premature death of the best analogue mobile system ever installed in the world? Another political decision, that deprived rural Austlians of adequate mobile coverage for many years (CDMA was a woeful substitute).
fttn is the only cost effective solution on the table - let's resurrect it and get it done.
