at the moment voip is a hassle and there aren't massive cost savings and u have to buy the equipment, but remember a DVD burner 3 years ago was $700 and is now down to as low as $70. A DVD player was once $800 only 5 years ago and they are now as low as $50. The take up by the avg joe will occur when there are real cost savings through voip (calls worth next to nothing) and also at the same time when the handsets and provider costs are really cheap. Like other technologies this will happen ... I'd give it 3-4 years to be taken up massively IMHO.
