At a recent shareholder day analysts and investors saw first hand how serious the telco is about its new Telstra Energy and Telstra Health sections, which could start contributing to higher dividends again. The consensus estimate sees dividends rising to 18.5¢ by 2025.

The most bullish analyst is Neale Anderson from HSBC, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. He has a $5.20 price target on the stock, followed by Jefferies’ Roger Samuel with a $4.66 target.

    Telstra shares hit four-year high
    By Lucy Battersby

Once one of the most widely held stocks in Australia thanks to privatisation by the federal government, Telstra is now mostly held by institutional investors. It has more voting shares on issue than another other company in the top 200, 11.9 billion shares, making it highly liquid and a useful place for institutional traders to ‘park’ funds.

Today the stock price has hit $4.09 for the first time since August 2017, when it announced a reduction in what had been a reliable annual dividend. Dividends fell from 31¢ annually, to 22¢ including special dividends in 2018, down to 16¢ including special dividends in 2021.
