Just to give a bit of balance here.
Our new neighbours are from England and came out 12 months ago a work visa seeking permanent residency. A couple in their thirties with two young children. He is a plasterer and she a stay at home mum.
Having just arrived to Aust. they have been provided with all the usual Centrelink benefits afforded to every one else ie. Family Tax Benefits A and B, Partnered Parenting Payment (when applicable) and rental assistance. Although only here for part of the last financial year they also received the end of year family supplement adjusted on a pro rata basis.
The government also provided them with rent assistance whilst looking for a home. Recently they signed a house and land package and have been granted the first home buyers grant.
Over xmas they returned to England for 8 weeks to visit family and continued to receive all their Centrelink Family Benefits.
That's why we're the Lucky Country.
