Telstras data centres would have been built to a very different standard than what we are typically seeing today, and I would suspect that they would be rapidly aging now.
Most of the major new facilities being built are going to be Uptime Tier certified if they want to be competitive. I dont believe many of the Telstra facilities were certified, if any have been, but I stand to be corrected. This does tend to have quite a big influence on end user clients now, as Uptime certification is basically a third party audit of the facilities construction quality. Also the newer facilities are built to accommodate larger power loads, not to mention increasing maintenance costs and the growing risk of downtime as a facility starts to age.
I think companies like Telstra and Vocus are trying to sell off these aging assets because they are no longer core to their main business, but also because they are struggling to compete against the specialists. In both cases probably trying to free up cash too given recent performance. People are moving to cloud for one, and if they are moving to colocation they are moving the better facilities that companies like NextDC and Equinix build.
