There is another fact to consider in that the States are the power. ie Australia is a confederation of states.
Canberra has for years been steadily eating away at that power to make the states ineffective and to take total control

To remove the states would require a change to the constitution which is another area that Canberra has been trying to do for many years.

I fully agree that we have a very expensive system

But it is the changes that have been made to the system that are wrong not the fact that we have states.

Politicians love to fiddle with systems until they have total control and in the case of Australia it means that we have all the states and the federal government all pushing for more money more staff and more control.

Even local councils are excessively large for what they have to do and also what they actually do.

There would be an enormous amount of work to be done prior to even considering making the change to eliminating the states

Look at the moves throughout Australia to combine local councils, an unmitigated disaster resulting in (in my area) 4 separate council administrations and not less, but more staff and fewer services

If we did away with the states we would finish up with the bureaucracies being twice the size, because that is the way it works not because it needs to be.
