SA Water has called for agri-business proposals to use up to 12 gigalitres of recycled water a year in Adelaide's north.

A new waste water recycling scheme in Adelaide's north will supply food to the booming Asian market, SA Water says.

Businesses wanting to tap into the $155 million project have been invited to send in proposals.

SA Water says 12 gigalitres of recycled water will be available each year with the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme funded by both the state and federal governments.

"The aim is to use this water to develop a new agri-food precinct across 3000 hectares of the northern Adelaide plains, which will supply booming export markets in Asia and across the world," SA Water spokesman Jim McGuire said on Thursday.

"Water through the scheme is suitable for horticulture, floriculture, fruit and nut orchards, table and wine grapes, high-value broad-acre cropping, poultry and other animal husbandry, and aquaculture."

Construction work on the irrigation project is expected to begin in early 2018, with the first water delivered in 2019.

Business SA said the project would create 150 construction jobs and up to 3700 ongoing positions in the horticulture sector.

It is expected to attract about $1.1 billion in private sector investment from companies seeking to break into export markets.

"The scheme will leverage South Australia's competitive advantage in horticulture and create much-needed jobs in Adelaide's north where they are going to be in need following Holden's exit," Business SA spokesman Anthony Penney said.
