I bought my house in St. Kilda in 1993 for $157,000 and now it is paid off I can live in it more or less for free! Plus I will never need to move home. With the benefit of hindsight that was a very good investment, I would say. Also, because I own it, I was able to install solar energy. No landlord is ever going to pay for that if the tenant is the only beneficiary.
