What sort of candidate do you envisage being suitable?
A State Governor is an appointed political position.
The GG is the monarch's representative & in fact does the job of the Head of State, so swapping that makes no difference in reality.
The monarch has no involvement in the GG appointment, it could be voted on now.
The reason why the Republic referendum failed IMO was because the alternative was outlined.
Without a clear alternative you'd end up with the same result because Australia isn't disadvantaged by having the monarch as Head of State.
Only the egos of some are damaged.
