SG is vice regal not political. You have to start somewhere with selection of candidates. Gives government a minor involvement.
GG was British, appointed by British government. Progressively became Australian, then Australian government appointment. In a democracy the people SHOULD elect the Head of State. Anything less IS LESS. What is allowed under British Law still applies;
Ask the descendants of our early inhabitants who should be our Head of State.
If the monarchy is irrelevant get rid of it. Australia pretends to be a sovereign nation and will be until archaic British laws are repealed.and struck out. Our Constitution is even British document FFS.
