Oh how sadly these dread things escalate: In WWII the US reluctantly declined bombing German civilian targets sortof, over Europe and insisted on strategic bombing only, sortuv. Perhaps the fact that of US ancestors of the nations England, Scotland, Ireland & Germany at the time of WWII, the US German ancestry was the largest?
Excuses flowed as freely as did the bombs though. For the US's qualms evaporated in the East, as incendiary bombing of Japan's wooden cities was well planed and orchestrated to time with strong winds meant to fan the flaming the houses, homes and peoples of target cities.
The Poms freely bombed whatever 'targets' they could in Germany. But that's the Brits...
This escalated from the first (again sortuv) respected breaches of Geneva protocol at once adopted by both the Axis & the Allies. There was no real Geneva agreement on air assault. The Germans had bad form though - from Franco's Spain, & Japan was busy bombing Chinese civilians with an abandon. So no side was to be trusted, least of all the Germans, the Brits would say.
But the initial attacks on Britain and Germany and visa versa were at first directed only against strategic military positions, and then this soon escalated to military defences which soon escalated to each other's industry, then on to industrial worker's houses, and then finally to civilians.
At each stage the one side deriding the other, and so justifying the one-upping to the next horrid stage.
Sadly in the War that Islam has declared on the west (Or is that the other way around, for The West sent their proxy Infidels Jews into what is obviously Allah's lands?) no uniforms have ever been worn, and rather than the civilians being the very last targets, they have always tended to be the very first.
Geneva means nothing. Those rules, intended largely to spare the civilians, mean nothing.
So sad ...
