I went heavily into gold during the Gulf Wars and it didn't deliver, which I found surprising (for obvious historical reasons). Of the list you provided shorting the airlines and insurance companies may provide the biggest (most volatile) counter balance with possibly Qantas being the best "hedge" as they would also be affected if Australian overseas interests were targeted.
I'll do some research on what is available with October expiry dates.
