We Qld students in my day, when 13-14 they had to sit "Scholarship" exams. They were SERIOUS examinations set by the university system to gain ACCEPTANCE to high school. My brother who had problems with maths almost had a breakdown.

When we reached Senior [Y 12] you had to have good grades to even do "arts". But there was no such thing as HECS or free uni. Dad paid or you didn't go. This was particularly tough on the girls as few Dads were willing to fund them.

    So quityabitchin!

No way am I saying budgets should be cut but the money should be targeted in the way we say social security should be targeted. Best way to target serious students is via scholarships.

    No IQ, no scholarship.
