totally agree , sounds like we are on the same page, given most homes seem to have 2 vehicles ,from a purely utilitarian view point if one of the vehicles is electric and used mainly for commuting short distances it becomes fit for purpose , whereas if the second vehicle is just used for long hauls or carrying /pulling loads and is ICE powered that also becomes fit for purpose.
How differences in motive power effects the environment is a separate issue as is the efficiency and type of electric source for electric vehicles (renewable or oil based ) energy source .
Most electric cars in Australia and China are powered via coal fired poser stations which means the cars reduce pollution in the immediate environment but are polluting more than a diesel car towards global greenhouse gasses .
