New EV battery lasts for 1.2million miles
Chinese company, ContemporaryAmperex Technology Co. Ltd.(CATL), this week announced a new batterytechnology that could revolutionise the electric vehicle market.
Technical details are unclear, but industryinsiders believe the new batteries are likely based on research by a team atDalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, wholast year partnered with Tesla on advanced battery designs. The cathodes ofmost traditional batteries have small crystals of lithium nickel manganesecobalt oxide (NMC), but the Dalhousie team developed a way of using largercrystals – resulting in a structure that the team explained is less likely tocrack while the battery charges; one of the primary features contributing tosuch a long lifespan.
